The city behind the products
Handan sits in southern Hebei, on the edge of the North China Plain. More than 2,000 years ago it was the capital of the State of Zhao, and it is still watched over by the Wuling Congtai Terrace, a pavilion on a high earthen platform that gave the city its emblem.
Handan is best known in Chinese culture as the birthplace of hundreds of classical idioms (成语). Phrases such as 邯郸学步 ("learning to walk in Handan"), 完璧归赵 ("returning the jade to Zhao intact") and 胡服骑射 ("riding and shooting in nomadic dress") all come from stories set here. For Chinese readers these are familiar sayings; for visitors they are the shortest possible introduction to the city.
